What is a prompt improver?
A prompt improver, also called a prompt optimizer or prompt enhancer, takes a prompt you already have and makes it more likely to get a good answer the first time. Promptivo’s works in two steps: a free prompt checker that scores your prompt against seven essentials and flags what works against your AI, then a rebuild that keeps your wording and adds what’s missing in a structure the model follows well.
The free prompt checker: 7 essentials
Every prompt is checked for these. Missing ones become quick questions, then sections in the improved prompt.
- 01RoleA short line on how the AI should act sets the standard it works to.
- 02Context and audienceWho it's for and why, so the AI doesn't guess the level and tone.
- 03A clear taskWhat you want done and what a good result includes.
- 04ConstraintsWhat to avoid or stay within, so the AI doesn't pick its own scope.
- 05Output formatThe shape of the answer: bullets, a table, an email, JSON.
- 06A "Done when" testWhat a finished answer looks like, so the AI doesn't stop early or pad.
- 07Quality checksWhat the AI should verify before it answers.
Problems it fixes
- "Think step by step" on a reasoning modelModels like Claude Opus, GPT-6 and Gemini already reason before answering; asking for visible steps can make answers worse.
- All-caps rulesMUST, NEVER and ALWAYS in capitals make current models over-apply a rule. Say it once, plainly, with the reason.
- Mixed length signals"Be concise" next to "give a detailed breakdown" leaves the AI to guess.
- Expert titles on factual work"World-class expert" doesn't make factual answers more accurate (Zheng et al., EMNLP 2024). Describing the behavior you want does.
- Unfilled placeholdersTemplate fields like [insert topic] left in by accident.
Before and after
A one-line prompt, improved for ChatGPT with four quick answers (audience, format, length, what “done” means). This is the tool’s real output.
Write a blog post about remote work productivity tips.
# Role You are an experienced content strategist and writer who crafts clear, compelling output that resonates with the intended audience. # Context Audience: My team # Task Write a blog post about remote work productivity tips. # Constraints - Length: Medium (150 to 400 words). - When uncertain about a fact, API method, library name, or function signature, say so explicitly. Do not produce a plausible guess. - Do not invent citations, URLs, or package names. If you don't know one, omit it or flag that you don't. # Output format Deliver it as: Bulleted list. # Done when - Ready to use without edits - the result is delivered as a bulleted list and nothing else - the length is medium (150 to 400 words), as requested - a reader in this audience (My team) can act on it without further explanation # Checks Before you respond, confirm that: - the opening line speaks to the stated audience - every claim is supportable - tone and length match the brief
Improver, optimizer, enhancer: same job
People call it a prompt improver, prompt optimizer, prompt enhancer, prompt refiner or prompt fixer. They all mean making an existing prompt clearer and more complete. A prompt checker or prompt grader does the first half: it tells you what’s there and what’s missing. Promptivo does both, and Polish with AI adds a full rewrite when you want one.
How to make a prompt better yourself
- Say who the result is for and what they will do with it.
- Name the output format and length you want.
- Add a "Done when" line: what makes the answer good enough to use.
- Ask the AI to check one or two specific things before it answers.
- State each rule once, plainly, with the reason. Skip the capitals.
- For models that reason on their own, drop "think step by step".
Starting from scratch instead? The free AI prompt generator interviews you and writes a new prompt. The reasoning behind these rules is in the 2026 evidence-based prompting paper.
Questions, answered
What is a prompt improver?
A prompt improver takes a prompt you already have and makes it more likely to get a good answer. Promptivo's checks your prompt for the parts AI models rely on (role, context, task, constraints, output format, a test for when it's done, and quality checks), asks about anything missing, then rebuilds it in a clear structure for the AI you use.
Is the prompt improver free?
Yes. Checking and improving a prompt is free and unlimited, with no sign-up. The optional Polish with AI rewrite uses one of your free daily builds: 2 a day without an account, 5 a day with a free name-and-email signup.
Does it send my prompt to an AI?
Not unless you choose Polish with AI. The check and the improved version are built in your browser by Promptivo's rules. Polish with AI sends the prompt to Claude (Anthropic) for a deeper rewrite, and the button says so.
Is a prompt improver the same as a prompt optimizer or prompt enhancer?
Yes. Improver, optimizer, enhancer, refiner and fixer are different names for the same job: making an existing prompt clearer and more complete so the AI gets it right the first time. A prompt checker or grader is the first half of that job, scoring what the prompt has and what it lacks.
Which AI models does it work with?
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Llama, Mistral, Perplexity and Fable. You pick the AI and the improved prompt is tuned for it, for example removing "think step by step" for models that already reason on their own.
Does it work for prompts in other languages?
Yes. It reads section headings in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian, and keeps your text as written. The sections it adds are in English, which AI models read fine; Polish with AI rewrites the whole prompt in your prompt's language.
How is this different from the prompt generator?
The prompt generator starts from a goal and interviews you to write a new prompt. The prompt improver starts from a prompt you already have, keeps your wording, and fixes what's missing or working against you.
Does Promptivo store my prompt?
Promptivo keeps an anonymous record of the first 500 characters of what's entered, with no name or email, to see what people use it for, and deletes it after 30 days. Copy your improved prompt; Promptivo doesn't keep the result.
Can it improve image prompts?
This improver is built for text prompts. For Midjourney, ChatGPT Images, Stable Diffusion and other image models, use the image prompt builder, which writes prompts in each model's format.
